U. S. Dearing at Age 78

In 1981, U. S. Dearing was named Man of the Year by the Bel-Air Civic Club (which led to commendations from the U.S. House of Representatives, Ohio House of Representatives, and State Auditor's Office, as well as the designation of August 23 as U. S. Dearing Day by the Cuyahoga County Commissioners and Cleveland City Council. For a man who had risen from extreme poverty to establish a flourishing business, Dearing surely saw his greater rewards as the relationships he cultivated with his patrons, who ranged from neighbors to visiting celebrities like Count Basie, Lena Horne, and Louis Armstrong. | Date: August 21, 1981 | Source: Cleveland Memory, Michael Schwartz Library Special Collections at Cleveland State University
